First trip: establish access
Your first objective is a reliable route home. Mark the coast, choose a landing area you can recognize, and build only enough local infrastructure to recover from a death. Do not carry every valuable item you own on the scouting run.
Bring a replaceable combat loadout
Use food, armor and weapons strong enough to survive but not so irreplaceable that one bad death ends the session. Keep one backup set at home. The psychological difference matters: you make better decisions when recovery is possible.
Treat poison and stamina as logistics problems
Swamp deaths often happen after stamina has already been spent moving, blocking or fighting in bad terrain. Enter with appropriate food/consumable preparation for the threats you expect, and do not start a second fight while the escape route is already compromised.
The Elder unlock matters
Iron Gate's official Ashlands preparation article still describes The Elder's drop as the key used for Swamp crypt progression. If your world group has advanced bosses without you, make sure you personally have access to the progression item before planning crypt runs.
Bank the first iron instead of snowballing risk
After the first meaningful haul, return it safely and use it to improve the next run. Repeated small successes beat losing a huge load and your best gear deep inside a biome you are still learning.
Use this as a plan, not a guarantee
Valheim is actively patched. Test tactics in your current world and adjust for world modifiers, group size and your own gear. The goal here is to reduce avoidable losses and wasted building, not to promise a perfect strategy.
