Self-host if administration is part of the hobby
A spare machine can make sense when the group enjoys configuring settings, mods, backups and networking. The monthly rental saving is real only if the hardware and uptime already exist.
Rent when nobody wants to be the permanent admin
Long-running Conan worlds can outlive one player’s interest. A rented server keeps the world independent of one home PC and makes ownership/availability clearer for the group.
Do not choose by slot count alone
For a private friend group, support quality, backups, mod handling, geographic location and upgrade flexibility can matter more than a huge advertised slot ceiling.
