Blender 5.3 Gaussian Splats: What 3D Artists Should Test Before the Release

Blender 5.3 adds native 3D Gaussian Splat import and rendering. That creates an early-search window now, before the planned November 2026 release.

Native import is the headline

The Blender 5.3 release notes document Gaussian Splat import from PLY and SPZ, represented as a point-cloud type inside Blender.

Workbench, EEVEE and Cycles can render them

All three render paths are documented as supporting splats, which makes Blender useful for inspection and look-development without immediately converting everything into a traditional mesh.

Do not promise an export pipeline yet

The current Blender 5.3 notes explicitly say there is no Gaussian Splat export support yet. Build tutorials and products around inspection/import/rendering, not a nonexistent one-click round trip.

Performance and transform limitations matter

The release notes warn that performance is not ideal and Apply Transform is not yet correct for the new splat attributes. Early adopters need a test-first workflow.
